6 Job Searching Strategies for Older Workers

March 13, 2023

Searching for a new job is always stressful, even more so for older workers looking to change jobs or re-enter the workplace. As a more senior worker, you have the experience and wisdom but may be worried about competing with younger workers who are just starting their careers. The good news is that, as an older worker, you have skills and knowledge that younger generations may lack. If you are ready to get started on your next career path, below are a few strategies to help you get started.

1. Don't Downplay Your Experience

With age comes experience, and that experience is valuable in a workplace setting. Highlight your years of experience, making sure to cite specific goals you accomplished and ways that you benefited the company and the team.1

2. Take a Skills Inventory

Create a list of the various skills you developed over the years. Determine areas where you are strong and areas you may be lacking. If there are new skills that may make you more marketable, consider ways you can develop them. For example, if certain software is needed for the field you want to find a job in, you could consider taking a class.2

3. Tap Into Your Network

Another benefit of years of experience is a broader network than most young employees have. Contact old coworkers, bosses, vendors, and customers to find places that are hiring that may fit your skill set and career passion.1

4. Create the Perfect Resume

Freshen up your resume and make it concise, easy to read, and eye-catching. Even though you may have a lot of job experience, limit your career history to employment that relates to the job you are seeking. Focus on the most recent potions you held. You may also want to limit age-related info on your resume by not adding dates to your education or using terminology that is considered dated. 2

5. Ask for Help

Knocking on doors and handing out resumes is an older form of job seeking. With job placement companies, online job-seeking platforms, and social networking sites, you will be able to find more potential employers that are a better fit. You may also want to take advantage of career centers that match your skill set and experience with particular employers. 2

6. Stay the Course

Even though job searching may seem more daunting than it did in the past, it is essential to stay the course. If you need employment to save for retirement, take care of your financial goals, or provide you with a more fulfilling life, then finding your next career or job is worth the effort. There are always employers looking for workers with experience, and even though your job search may take longer, you are likely to find what you are looking for.
